The BatProject

Summary: This personal project graphs the relationships between Batman characters in the original cinematic universe, the core Arkham trilogy, and the 1960's TV show. Upon opening the application, you can toggle between the three universes, at which point there are different songs and backgrounds. When you type a character in the search bar, the information for that character is fetched, along with a photo, and on a separate window, a GraphStream maps that character's relationships to other characters in the same universe, with a green connection representing a friendship, and a red one representing a rivalry. You can also compare two characters, and the common friendships, common enemies, and degrees of separation will be shown in the output field.

How I Did It: The graphical user interface was made using Java's Swing package, and each character is loaded into an ArrayList that maps friendships and rivalries using objects of the Character class, which fetches information about said characters. I used these objects to connect the individual character stories to form stories involving two characters. In order to visually represent the relationships, I installed GraphStream, and the JLayer package was used to play music. The finished project was finally compiled into a portable JAR file.

Why Make This Project? I have been a Batman fan since my early childhood, when I watched DVD's of the 60's TV show with my older brother. When I started expanding my fandom, keeping track of the character relationships was a daunting task, since they vary by universe, and essentially form a complex web. Those unfamiliar but intrigued with the Batman family and Gotham City would find this program as a helpful guide.
