SimCinema
Summary: This application starts in the year 1980, and you are tasked with managing a 3-screen multiplex. As you control prices, what movies are shown, and what formats they are shown in,
you have the opportunity to expand to more screens through the years. A grade will be assigned based on your performance, allowing cheaper film rental from studios in the future, the better the grade is. If you make it to the year 2000 without shutting down, you win.
How I Did It: I implemented this application in a similar way to the movie selector, with a large movie database contained in MySQL. Only this time, a narrowed-down list is fetched by month, starting with
January 1980. I took real box office statistics and applied them here. When you progress a month, the business logic, which was written in plain Java, will be implemented and added to the Swing GUI. JLayer was once again used for
the music, which changes from the 80's to the 90's.
Roadblocks: This project, along with the movie recommendation app, was subject to MySQL corruption, forcing Git pulls and reconnection to the backend. To circumvent this issue in the future, I improved my file
organization considerably. Rather than using Gradle, I did the commands in PowerShell.
Why Make This Project? By creating a time-based business simulator, real-life trends can be shown. A way to increase the scope of this project would be to extend the timeline to 2026. But as is, there are over 1,000
rows in the SQL table.
